Synthesis
Questions for the synthesis assignments.
Synthesis I
Due Sep 20.
What does knowing a word without its pronunciation establish?
A speaker in a tip-of-the-tongue state knows a word’s grammatical gender but cannot pronounce it. Does this observation necessarily distinguish a strictly staged model from an interactive model? Explain what it establishes about representations and what it leaves unresolved about information flow.
Synthesis III
Due Nov 1.
Pick one paper from “The Lock in Weeks” for its question and a different paper from the same weeks for its method. Describe how you would test the first paper’s question using the second paper’s method: what participants do, what you manipulate, and what you measure. Then say what each hypothesis from the first paper predicts in your design. Finally, say whether your version is a better or worse test of that question than the original study, and give at least one concrete reason: what the method can or cannot measure, or what else could produce the same result. No more than half a page.
